Looking for a dog when you move?

If you are going to get a new family member when you move, ie. a dog, let's see what personality type will fit your new home , lifestyle and family.

First its good to get a shelter dog because there are millions of dogs who don't get to live because there are so many wanted dogs dumped in shelters across the US who often times do not get a home.  The fee for a shelter dog is reasonable because you get the shots, phical exam, neutered and possibly a nicrochip.

So if you are going to get a dog , consider your local shelter as a great starting place. Buddy was a shelter rescue and after my third visit to the shelter, I found him or he found me, not sure which it was.

Here are some breed choices for your lifestyle.

Good With Kids

Beagle, Basset Hound, Brittany Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel and if  you have a big yard you might consider an Old English Sheepdog.

Dogs that don't Require a lot of Exercise

Brussels Griffon, Dachshund, French Bulldog, Manchester Terrier,  and Toy Breads such as Chihuahua or Pekingese

Quite Dogs include

Basenji, Borzoir, Great Swiss Mountain Dog, Whippet and Borzoi and Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Friendly Dogs

Bearded Collie, Brittany Spaniel, Bichon Frise, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Old, English Sheepdog.

Intelligent Dogs

Australian Sheepdog, Belgian Sheepdog, German Shepherd, Keeshond and Poodle

Good City Dogs

Basenji, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, Pug, Scottish Terrier, and Welsh Corgi

Do your research before bringing a dog home. Check out a dog show or watch some old episodes of the Dog Whisperer where you will get some ideas about different breads.

Most likely the kids promising to take care of the dog will last a week at most so be prepared to give your dog plenty of exercise to get rid of the energy that a young dog will have.  Be sure to give the dog boundaries as they are fast learners and remember you are the pack leader.   The dog will give you years of companionship and loyalty and so remember this is a commitment for their life.
